30 Human Centric Lighting – LAMP 83

What is Human-Centered Lighting?

We need the right light at the right time for our daily activities. The answer to the question “What is Human-Centered Lighting®?” is: “It is the increase in living comfort by supporting people with the right artificial light at the right time, allowing them to benefit from the visual, biological, and psychological support of artificial light.”

Think Beyond Energy Savings:
Human-Centered Lighting®

In the concept of Human-Centered Lighting®, the goal is to use the light that guides our lives in every way in the most efficient manner, considering its biological and psychological effects on our body. Human-Centered Lighting® is the most suitable and healthiest artificial lighting system for the human body.

What is the Circadian Rhythm?

The rhythm that exists in the human body throughout a 24-hour cycle is called the Circadian Rhythm. During the day, we enjoy the appropriate release of dopamine within the natural circadian rhythm cycle, which helps us stay alert, maintains muscle coordination, controls our impulses and craving for carbohydrates with serotonin, and regulates our stress levels with cortisol. At night, melatonin helps us both sleep and refresh our body. This rhythm actually works in accordance with the natural balance of light and darkness and its timing.

Human-Centered Lighting® is a lighting and light system designed to support the circadian rhythm with artificial light, thought to ensure and maintain this regulation.

What is the difference between natural light and artificial light?

Up until 200 years ago, we spent approximately 90% of our time outdoors. Now, on the contrary, we spend 90% of our time indoors under artificial light.

Natural sunlight, the source of our life, continuously and dynamically changes in terms of color temperature and intensity. On the other hand, artificial light in indoor environments is usually constant in color temperature and intensity, which can disrupt the circadian rhythm and lead to some health issues. As a result, artificial light can directly affect human health, either positively or negatively.

There are significant differences between natural light and artificial light in terms of intensity, color, and dynamism. Natural light changes dynamically from sunrise to sunset, while artificial light remains generally the same from the moment you wake up until you go to bed.

This is where LAMP 83 engineers step in by integrating LAMP 83 lighting fixtures with Human-Centered Lighting® features and artificial light management systems, ensuring that artificial light can achieve the dynamism of natural daylight.

What are the effects of light on humans?

The most important factor that ensures the proper functioning of the biological clock in our body is light.

For our daily activities, we need the right light at the right time. That is, humans need light during the hours they are active during the day and darkness when they are asleep. Light directly affects our vision, body, senses, and emotions, either positively or negatively.

Visual effects of light: Vision, safety, and navigation

Biological effects of light: Alertness, individual performance, and the wake & sleep cycle

Psychological effects of light: Mood, energy levels, and relaxation

Human-Centered Lighting® According to Different Environments

According to research published by the European Lighting Association (Lighting Europe), the following effects have been observed in spaces illuminated with Human-Centered Lighting®:

In Workplaces and Factories: Increased staff productivity and motivation, reduced absenteeism, mistakes, and workplace accidents.

In Schools: Increased concentration and motivation of students, improved learning ability, and reduced errors.

In Retail Areas: Positive impact on consumer behavior, and increased time spent in these areas.

In Healthcare Institutions: Positive effects on the morale and performance balance of healthcare staff and patients.

In Nursing Homes: Positive effects on the morale and motivation of employees and residents, and a reduction in various accidents.

How is Human-Centered Lighting® Designed?

Human-Centered Lighting® refers to the concept of controlling the light obtained from artificial light sources in terms of distribution, intensity, and color temperature to structure and manage it in a way that supports human morale, motivation, and especially the circadian rhythm.

When designing Human-Centered Lighting® (HCL) systems, the visual, biological, and psychological effects of light on humans are taken into account, and the concept, which focuses on humans, aims to support people’s well-being, mood, and health.

What Can Bad Artificial Lighting Cause?

When the effects of light on health are not considered, disruptions in the sleep & wake cycle, decreased efficiency, performance, and concentration, as well as imbalances in mood, may occur. In summary, it is a well-known fact that improving the quality of light directly and positively affects people.

What Are the Benefits of Human-Centered Lighting®?

The Human-Centered Lighting® concept aims to contribute to factors such as our mood, energy, sense of relaxation or alertness, mental performance, and sleep & wake cycle by providing light at the correct intensity and color temperature that will facilitate the visual activities we need to perform.
